Coal Fumes Death Counter

You may have noticed that I have added a section at the bottom of the right column labeled "Coal Fumes Death Counter." I intended to show how many people have died since the last successful order for a nuclear power plant in the United States. Here's how I calculated it.
I can trace the Watts Bar nuclear power plant order to January 23, 1973. It was the last nuclear power plant to come online (1996), so I set the counter to register how many people have been killed by coal fumes since January 23, 1973. Since 30,000 people die every year:
30,000/365=82 per day
So far, I've only figured out how to advance it by day, so it underestimates the real number by about one every ten days. An accurate counter would be a timer that would increment once every 1051.2 seconds (17 minutes, 31.2 seconds).

Update 2/4/07: It now increments correctly.

Think of it in personal terms. One person dies from coal every 17 1/2 minutes.
Get out and do something!
